How Did This Accident Occur?
People are often quick to blame the driver for single-car accidents, especially when the happen late at night. After over thirty years in this career, I’ve learned not to make assumptions like that. Why? Because I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.
To be clear, I’m not implying that I know driver error was not the cause. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was caused by distraction, fatigue, impairment, or something else entirely—has yet to have been ruled out. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, the Silverado’s excessive speed could have been caused by something wrong with the vehicle itself, rather than the driver. What if, for example, it was experiencing brake failure? Or perhaps the throttle somehow got stuck in the open position?
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the pickup. Those types of inspections—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—can pinpoint any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might have played a role in the wreck. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear understanding of how and why the accident occurred. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation that just blame the victim won’t cut it.
