Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A crash like this highlights the challenges of winter driving and the risks that come with sharing the road with large commercial vehicles. While initial reports suggest road conditions played a role, a full investigation is necessary to determine if other factors contributed to the crash.
The role of road maintenance needs to be examined. Was this stretch of U.S. Route 97 properly treated with sand or de-icing materials before the crash? If not, did that contribute to the loss of control? Winter weather is an unavoidable hazard in certain areas, but highway departments are responsible for minimizing risks by keeping roads as safe as possible.
The truck driver’s actions should also be reviewed. Was the truck traveling at a reduced speed given the conditions? Did the driver have enough time to react once the Ford lost control? While semi-trucks cannot stop as quickly as smaller vehicles, dashcam footage and black box data could help clarify how the truck driver responded.
Finally, vehicle maintenance is an important factor in winter driving. Were the Ford’s tires in good condition and suited for icy roads? Did the semi-truck have proper traction control, and was it being operated in a way that accounted for reduced grip? Investigators should review the condition of both vehicles to determine if any mechanical issues contributed to the severity of the crash.
Collisions like this one demonstrate how unpredictable winter road conditions can be, particularly when smaller vehicles lose control near large commercial trucks. A full investigation should examine road conditions, driver actions and vehicle readiness to determine what led to the crash.
