According to officials, a 28-year-old New Jersey man and a 26-year-old man were in an International semi-truck going northbound on Highway 31. At the intersection, the semi-truck apparently continued through the intersection, lost control, and overturned across westbound lanes.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to something complex like potential brake failure, I’m always hesitant to trust that authorities handled investigations properly. Generally speaking, I rely on independent specialists to investigate mechanical issues. It takes years of experience and state-of-the-art tools not only to identify a mechanical problem that leads to an accident but also distinguish between a maintenance issue or a manufacturing defect.

Authorities, frankly, don’t typically prioritize this area of investigation. Even they tend to seek assistance from independent experts. Sometimes, though, they fail to take this step, and they end up letting important information slip through the cracks where it sits unnoticed or otherwise degrades over time to the point it’s no longer helpful to an investigation. Hopefully steps were taken here to make sure the truck’s brakes were examined by professionals. Otherwise, there could be serious issues that aren’t getting proper attention.
