Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Obviously, a fatal truck wreck should always be taken seriously. My concern, though, is that authorities don’t always set their bias aside when it comes to young drivers. Since teenagers are statistically more likely to make mistakes, officers sometimes make hasty assumptions, and that can get in the way of conducting a proper, careful accident reconstruction.
As such, this is a good example of the type of accident where it’s helpful to ask questions early and often. Have authorities looked into vehicle speeds? Did they analyze debris patterns? Are they pulling electronic data from the vehicles? Have they pulled cell phone records? Did they inspect the vehicles for potential defects? Have they looked for cameras at nearby businesses or homes?
Generally speaking, if a family finds that authorities are able to alleviate their doubts and answer their questions, it’s a sign authorities are conducting thorough investigations. But if their answers instead come up short and leave gaps in the story, that can be a sign that the crash needs another look from experienced independent accident reconstructionists. That way, they can help ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
