Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the most important lessons people can learn about complex commercial truck wrecks is that the preliminary reports almost never tell the whole story. At the end of the day, these accidents create chaotic scenes that require state-of-the-art tools, extensive experience, and time to carefully analyze. Authorities are certainly capable of that, but people don’t always know that authorities came up short until it’s too late.

This is one of the reasons independent investigators are so crucial for victims and families affected by serious accidents. The reason I always relied on them across the hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases I’ve litigated is because they have one priority: get answers. If those answers show that authorities did good investigations already, and their findings are simply reconfirmed, that can be a world of weight off the shoulders of a grieving family. Otherwise, if there authorities left gaps in the story or missed crucial details, a second set of eyes can fill in those holes and set the record straight.

Regardless of what happened here, there are people who deserve to be sure they’re getting the full story. It will likely take more than these early media statements to see that happen.
