Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this occur, people often focus on the immediate damage and chaos at the scene, assuming the events unfolded due to simple mistakes or misjudgments. However, in my experience, wrecks involving large trucks and multiple vehicles typically involve a web of factors that require thorough investigation to fully understand what went wrong.
What triggered the initial collision among these five vehicles? Was it driver error, sudden braking, or poor communication between drivers? Were road conditions a contributing factor, or did an unforeseen hazard force one or more vehicles to react abruptly? Investigating these elements is key to determining the chain of events that led to the accident.
The overturned 18-wheeler also raises questions that need attention. Did the truck veer off the road while trying to avoid other vehicles, or did a mechanical failure make it impossible to maintain control? Large trucks are highly susceptible to catastrophic accidents if their brakes, tires, or steering systems malfunction. Was the truck properly inspected and maintained, or did overlooked issues play a role in its instability?
The trucking company’s practices must also come under scrutiny. Companies bear responsibility for ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy and their drivers are adequately trained to handle emergencies. Did the driver have sufficient rest before the trip, or was fatigue a factor in the accident? Was the company maintaining its fleet according to federal regulations, or were lapses in maintenance contributing to this crash? Exploring these possibilities could reveal broader problems within the company that demand accountability.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
