Sutter County, CA — December 18, 2024, three people were injured following a multi-vehicle tow truck accident at approximately 3:15 p.m. along S.H. 99.
According to authorities, the accident took place in the northbound lanes of State Highway 99 in the vicinity south of the Encinal Road intersection.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. Northbound traffic on the highway at the time had apparently been slowing. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a northbound tow truck failed to appropriately control its speed for traffic conditions. This resulted in a collision the rear-end of a Subaru occupied by a 50-year-old woman. The impact caused a chain reaction of crashes with a Nissan, a Mazda, and a Hyundai.
The 50-year-old woman from the Subaru suffered serious injuries, according to reports; she was flown to an area medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. A 29-year-old woman who was pregnant and a 43-year-old man also reportedly sustained injuries of unknown severity; they were taken by EMS for treatment, as well. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

However, in my experience handling cases involving commercial vehicles, the truth is rarely that simple. Incidents like this often involve multiple contributing factors, and unraveling those factors is crucial to fully understanding what went wrong.
The first area of inquiry must be the tow truck driver’s failure to control their speed. Were they distracted, fatigued, or otherwise not paying full attention to the slowing traffic ahead? Speed management is a fundamental part of operating a commercial vehicle safely, especially in conditions where traffic is slowing or stopping. Any lapse in judgment or attention in such circumstances can quickly lead to a chain reaction, as seen in this incident.
Beyond the driver’s actions, the tow truck’s mechanical condition must also be scrutinized. Trucks rely heavily on their braking systems, tires, and other critical components to handle sudden changes in traffic conditions. Were the brakes and other safety features of the tow truck properly maintained? Investigators should determine if any mechanical issues played a role in the driver’s inability to stop in time.
