Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this happen, people may assume they’re simply due to the bus being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, in my experience, incidents involving school buses on busy highways raise important questions about how a multi-vehicle accident occurred and whether all appropriate precautions were taken to prevent it.

A major concern for investigators should be understanding what led to a school bus being caught in a multi-vehicle collision spanning four lanes. It’s important to consider whether issues such as driver attentiveness, vehicle speed, or unexpected traffic patterns contributed to the incident. On busy highways like U.S. 59, a sudden stop or lane change can quickly lead to pileups, especially when visibility is limited or drivers don’t have enough time to react. Additionally, the safety of school buses on high-speed roads is dependent on both the training of the bus driver and the surrounding traffic’s adherence to highway laws, as buses can be more vulnerable in dense traffic due to their limited maneuverability.

If the school bus was operating under Lufkin ISD’s supervision, it’s essential to evaluate the district’s safety protocols, including training for highway driving and guidance on safe routes for transporting students. School districts have a responsibility to ensure their drivers are equipped to handle potential hazards in high-traffic areas. Any lapses in driver preparation or safety guidelines could suggest shared responsibility for the accident.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
