Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash involves an 18-wheeler, an SUV, and a motorcycle, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, wrecks like this rarely occur without multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.

What triggered the collision? Multi-vehicle crashes don’t happen in isolation—something set off the chain of events. Did the SUV or truck make a sudden lane change? Did the motorcycle get caught in a blind spot? Investigators should review dashcam footage, black box data, and witness statements to determine how the wreck unfolded.

Did the truck driver have enough time to react? Professional drivers are trained to scan their surroundings and anticipate hazards, but motorcycles are smaller and more vulnerable than other vehicles. If the truck driver failed to see the motorcyclist or was unable to stop in time, that needs to be scrutinized. Investigators should analyze braking distances, lane positioning, and driver reaction times.

Was visibility an issue? Motorcycles are harder to see than larger vehicles, especially in heavy traffic or during low-light conditions. If the truck or SUV driver failed to notice the motorcycle, investigators should determine whether blind spots, turn signals, or improper mirror usage played a role. Reviewing vehicle inspections, lighting conditions, and crash scene evidence could provide insight.

Did the trucking company play a role? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are properly trained and following safety regulations. If this driver was fatigued, under pressure to meet tight deadlines, or operating a poorly maintained truck, investigators need to uncover those details. Reviewing company policies, safety records, and prior violations could provide insight into whether broader issues contributed to the crash.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity they deserve.
