Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When people hear about crashes like this one, it’s easy for them to assume they are a result of simple driver error. However, in my experience, accidents involving motorcycles and large trucks often require thorough investigations to understand all contributing factors.
In this incident, it’s essential to determine why the 18-wheeler chose to pull off the active lane and into the shoulder to make a wide left turn. This maneuver, while sometimes necessary for large vehicles, can introduce significant risks if not executed properly. Investigators need to consider whether the truck driver checked for approaching traffic, including smaller vehicles like motorcycles, before initiating the turn.
A critical aspect of this accident is the collision during the truck’s turn. Large trucks have substantial blind spots and limited maneuverability, making it difficult to see smaller vehicles like motorcycles. The investigation should assess whether the truck driver was aware of the motorcycle’s presence and if they adhered to proper safety protocols when making the turn.
Additionally, the trucking company responsible for the 18-wheeler may share in the responsibility for the accident. If the company failed to enforce safety protocols, properly train their drivers, or ensure that their vehicles were in good working order, they could be held accountable for their role in the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
