Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Early reports can rarely paint a vivid picture of how a wreck happened, since investigators are usually still trying to assemble the puzzle. The video footage seems troubling, though, as it looks like the bus driver may have failed to yield when trying to pass through the lanes where the motorcyclist was riding.

Does that mean the bus driver was at fault? It’s too early to tell before many other questions are answered. Here’s a few that come to mind: Was the stop sign clearly visible—or there at all? Was the bus driver’s full attention on their surroundings? If not, why not? How fast was the motorcycle traveling? Was the rider watching the road? Were both vehicles in good working order? If not, what was wrong with them? Were their operators in good health?

I don’t mean to suggest I know something investigators don’t. I just know from long experience that things aren’t always as simple as they may seem at first. No one should jump to conclusions before all the facts are in, and sometimes getting those facts means digging much deeper than a standard investigation typically does. That young man’s loved ones deserve real answers, so I hope that’s what someone delivers.
