According to authorities, a 34-year-old man was traveling on a motorcycle on Interstate Highway 30 near Westmoreland Road when the accident took place. The man reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. It does not appear that anyone else was hurt. Reports also state that the motorcycle apparently caught on fire over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the motorcyclist—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When considering motorcycle-involved accidents, many folks are quick to blame the rider and move on without giving it much additional thought. After over thirty years in this career, though, I’ve come to believe that motorcyclists get a bad rap. Why? Because, over the years I have seen plenty of similar cases in which causes that went against the grain of the stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigation.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the lane change could actually have been a result with something gone wrong with the motorcycle itself, such as a steering mechanism issue, for example. I would also be interested to know whether or not a design flaw or a product defect played a role in the fact that the motorcycle ended up in flames.
An in depth vehicle inspection on the motorcycle would bring to light any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaw that had a hand in the wreck rather than allowing them to fly under the radar. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to fully understand both how it occurred and why. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
