How Did This Accident Occur?
Many folks, when they hear about motorcycle-involved car accidents, make the assumption that the motorcyclist was probably the one at fault. After over three decades in the is career, though, I have come to believe that motorcyclists get a bad rap. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of causes that went against the grain of stereotype.
I am certainly not trying to insinuate that I know more information about this particular accident than is already publicly available, by the way. I simply want to suggest a hypothetical. A quick Google Maps search will who you that the intersection where this accident took place is controlled by a traffic signal. What if the signal itself was malfunctioning at the time of the accident? These lights, while excellent tools, are not infallible. There is a chance, however slim, that it gave contradicting signals to the SUV and the motorcycle, and that was what led to the collision.
This might seem like a hairbrained theory, but it’s certainly something that meticulous and openminded investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—should be looking into in order to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident—especially the loved ones left behind by the victim—deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it happened. The vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
