One of the things I encourage most on this blog is the importance of an open mind. Preliminary reports like the one above are mostly just “best guesses” derived from available evidence at the scene, and the story uncovered by a careful investigation might be nothing like first theories.

That’s especially true in motorcycle wrecks, where I’d take most early findings with a grain or six of salt. The reality is a lot of folks, even authorities, are sometimes likely to blame motorcyclists before they actually know the whole story. Am I saying riders can’t make mistakes? Of course not, but prematurely deciding they were reckless or impaired is highly unfair. What if the bike was defective or malfunctioning? Was there anything on the road that might have affected traction? Are there a lot of crashes around here? It seems like there were plenty of vehicles around; could someone have forced the bike off-course?

I’m not saying I know something investigators don’t. I just know that in all manner of crashes, things aren’t always as simple as they seem—or we’d like them to be. Experienced investigators know the importance of letting the evidence speak for itself. Either they can rule out alternative explanations, or they can address issues that a simple, surface-level investigation might overlook. The question, then, is what steps have authorities taken to make sure they’re getting the whole story here.
