Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this occur, it’s natural to wonder how a collision could happen during something as routine as a left turn. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks and passenger vehicles often arise from a complex interplay of decisions and circumstances, all of which warrant careful examination.

Why did the SUV attempt to pass the 18-wheeler as it was turning? Did the driver misunderstand the truck’s intentions, or were there other factors that may have obscured their judgment? Was the truck signaling properly or slowing down in a way that could have been misinterpreted? Understanding what led to this dangerous situation requires piecing together the actions and awareness of all parties involved.

The truck’s role in the collision must also be scrutinized. While making a left turn, did the truck driver check their mirrors and blind spots to ensure the turn could be completed safely? Was the turn executed properly, or did the truck encroach on the adjacent lane in a way that left little room for others to react?

The trucking company responsible for the 18-wheeler also deserves scrutiny. Companies are tasked with hiring capable drivers, maintaining their fleets, and providing the training necessary for safe operations. Was the driver adequately trained to handle maneuvers like left turns in busy traffic? Did the company properly inspect and maintain the truck to ensure it could perform as expected during such actions? Failing in any of these areas could mean the company shares responsibility for what happened.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
