One of my biggest concerns when I read about single-vehicle wrecks is whether or not they’re getting the attention they deserve. These crashes sometimes involve highly complex factors, like mechanical defects, road design flaws, medical conditions, or tire failure, to name a few examples.

Most people, though, just assume the driver messed up. That’s obviously possible—in fact, it’s common. But even those possibilities can involve unique factors, like someone being illegally over-served by an alcohol provider or a defect failing to prevent otherwise preventable injuries. But when authorities are the ones jumping to conclusions, stuff like that can easily slip through the cracks. Maybe authorities here are being thorough, but I’ve helped too many people set police reports straight to take that for granted.
