Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I’m relieved to learn that the hit-and-run driver was quickly located, and I hope the justice system deals out stiff consequences for his attempt to flee the scene. That’s an unconscionable act, and no explanation I’ve ever heard justifies it. Despite that, I hope Harris County authorities get at least some kind of explanation from their suspect. What could possibly have motivated him to leave after mortally injuring someone, and seriously hurting another?

If this situation is anything like many others we’ve encountered, investigators may eventually discover the driver fled in an effort to hide something else. Some have illegal possessions like guns or drugs, while others have active warrants and don’t want their prior sins catching up to them. In many cases the driver is intoxicated when they hit someone and flee because they aren’t thinking clearly. In those cases with drunk drivers, it sometimes turns out that a local bar is partly responsible for the damage done and should be held responsible.

So what happened on Addicks Satsuma Road, and why did the driver try to leave it behind? Only careful investigation could really say, but I strongly believe that the victims’ loved ones deserve to know that every effort was made to bring them the whole story. Any further action beyond that would depend on what the story turns out to be.
