Generally speaking, a rear-end collision like this is going to be the result of things like distracted driving, speeding, and following too closely. There can be extenuating circumstances, of course. Mechanical defects, road hazards, a broken-down vehicle blocking a lane of travel, etc. But even in the likely scenario this happened due to negligent driving, things can become quite complex if that negligence was foreseeable.

For example, I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases, and many involve employers who encourage or allow their drivers to be reckless. They may set unreasonable deadlines, skip vital maintenance work, push drivers to work longer hours, hire inexperienced drivers or drivers with a history of reckless behavior, or any number of other short cuts that would inevitably result in people getting hurt. If authorities aren’t careful enough in their investigations, they might blame the crash on a symptom rather than rooting out the bigger problem that could be putting others at risk.
