If the allegations here are true, it’s at least good to see steps being taken to ensure there will be consequences for someone leaving the scene of an accident. However, there could be more to this story which authorities have yet to address. Specifically, they allege that the driver they charged for leaving the scene also had been drinking prior to the accident. Was the driver intoxicated, and if so, were they unlawfully over-served? Here’s why this matters.
A lot of times with alcohol-related accidents, folks see a driver face charges, and they figure that’s all there is to know. In reality, there could be more than one wrongdoer that needs to be held accountable for their actions. I’ve handled hundreds of cases where a drunk driver was unlawfully over-served by a bar or similar establishment, and that meant the alcohol provider was exposed to potential criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability for the injuries resulting from their actions.
Generally speaking, folks don’t want an easy solution or some bad guy to blame. They want to know there’s going to be accountability for the wrongs done to them. So as important as it is for an alleged runaway driver to answer for their actions, it could be just the beginning if there was more than one wrongdoer who contributed to the crash. If authorities haven’t looked any further into the alleged alcohol that may have contributed to this accident, they could be missing something crucial.
