Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

While not confirmed right now, authorities allege that the driver was under the influence alcohol. To be clear, I’m not saying this to throw blame around. In fact, I bring it up because there’s often an outside party involved in alcohol-related accidents that authorities completely overlook: the alcohol providers.

Simply put, alcohol providers can be responsible when they illegally over-serve someone, and it leads to people getting hurt. While all of the focus understandably is on the drivers in these situations, there could be a negligent alcohol provider out there being let off the hook continuing to put others at risk. Why should they get away with their actions while others take all the blame and bear the burden of the harm those alcohol provider contributed to?

That’s why it’s important accidents like this get more attention than they usually do. Perhaps there were no extenuating circumstances here, but people were seriously hurt. That alone warrants attention into not simply finding someone to blame but rather how to make things right.
