How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to accidents where motorcycles veer into oncoming traffic, most people are quick to point the finger at the motorcyclist. After more than thirty years in this career, I’ve learned not to jump to conclusions, no matter how simple things seem on the surface. Why? Because I’ve seen plenty of cases over the years in which the investigation managed to unearth evidence of less likely causes.

To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. As far as I am aware, driver error is still on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that something could have gone wrong with the motorcycle to cause the wreck. What if, for example, it had a tire blowout? Or maybe there was something wrong with the steering? Motorcycles, while smaller than passenger cars, are still complex machines. Honestly, any number of things might have happened to lead the the accident.

An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck rather than allowing them to fly under the radar. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. That way all the bases are covered and nothing important falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident—especially those left behind by the victim—deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how and why this accident occurred. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
