Accident Report

May 23, 2026, Michael Smith was injured following an alleged intoxicated driver accident around 9:54 p.m. on Highway 198.

According to initial details about the accident, it happened south of Mason Street off Woodland Street. Details say that 40-year-old Michael Smith was in a Chevy Cruze going northbound on 3rd Street. While doing so, an oncoming Nissan Sentra reportedly left its lane and crashed into the Chevy.

Due to the accident, Michael Smith was seriously injured. The Nissan driver had possible injuries. Authorities recommended the driver be charged for DWI due to possible drunk driving. Additional details are unavailable at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

If allegations in the preliminary reports are true, then it seems authorities suspect alcohol could be the cause for this crash. That may seem open-and-shut, especially if authorities follow through on charges, but these situations are often more complex than folks realize. That’s because there could be an accomplice to the crash if a negligent alcohol provider unlawfully over-served the at-fault driver.

Texas has laws which say bars, restaurants, and other establishments can be responsible if they serve someone who is obviously intoxicated, and it leads to harm. But when authorities begin and end their investigations at the crash scene, these negligent alcohol providers tend to slip under the radar. So, families might not see full accountability for the harm done to them unless further investigations happen behind the scenes.

Whether or not that’s what happened here, I can’t say right now. My point is that people understandably focus on drunk drivers after crashes like this. But if that’s where the questions end, serious—not to mention unlawful—behavior can go unchecked. Most everyone should agree that’s not acceptable, especially when there are serious injuries on the line.
