Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, people are often quick to jump to conclusions. Even authorities are sometimes hasty in their investigations, and that can lead to inaccurate or incomplete reports. That’s why a lot of victims and families feel they need a second set of eyes looking things over and asking the right questions.

Did the vehicle have any kind of defects? Were there road hazards? Did a tire blowout? Have authorities looked for security cameras in the area that may have captured the crash on video? Is there an issue with signage in the area? Was there some other reckless driver that left the scene? Did airbags and seatbelts function properly?

These are the kinds of questions I’m used to seeing from independent accident reconstructionists. They understand the importance of capturing the whole picture, and they prioritize getting as much evidence as possible, even if it’s just to rule out something unlikely. Authorities sometimes are capable of this level of effort, which is why it’s important that victims and families follow up with them as much as possible. If authorities are able to address serious concerns, it’s likely that they’re doing good investigations. But if they leave doubts and unanswered questions, that may be a sign there is slack someone needs to pick up.
