Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One concern I hope authorities have kept in mind here is that the age of the drivers shouldn’t impact how the facts are handled. It can surprise people to learn that investigations are sometimes less thorough when one of the drivers is young. This is because younger drivers are statistically more likely to make mistakes, and this sometimes leads officers to jump to conclusions if they don’t have the experience or time needed to handle things properly.

All kinds of possible factors have to be consider in a deadly car crash. Was there a mechanical failure? Did a tire blowout? Was someone unlawfully served alcohol? Did a medical condition lead to the crash? Are there issues with this particular stretch of road? Was cell phone usage involved? Did things like airbags and seatbelts function properly?

Likely or not, I’ve seen just about every possible factor contribute to a crash across hundreds of different cases. If authorities aren’t careful to at least rule out unlikely possibilities, they’re bound to miss something important. That’s why I have to wonder what steps they’re taking here to make sure the victims and families involved are getting the answers they deserve.
