At the same time, a southeast bound Ford Explorer occupied by a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman on Culebra Road was attempting a left turn onto northeast bound Joe Newton Road. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Ford attempted the turn at an unsafe time, neglecting to yield the right of way to oncoming northwest bound traffic. This resulted in a collision between the front-end of the Nissan and the front-right corner of the Ford.

Shay incurred suspected severe injuries as a result of the wreck. The woman from the Ford suffered moderate injuries, and the man from the Ford sustained apparently minor injuries, as well. All three were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment.
