Harris County, TX — September 7, 2024, Mary Fortier was killed in a single-car accident just before 9:15 p.m. along Huffmeister Road.
According to authorities, 81-year-old Mary Fortier was traveling in a southbound Toyota Rav4 on Huffmeister Road in the vicinity of the Shaft Drive intersection when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Toyota failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered off of the right side of the roadway where it was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it struck a sign and crashed into a ditch.
Fortier suffered critical injuries due to the wreck, according to reports; she was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment. However, she was ultimately unable to overcome the severity of her injuries having been declared deceased on September 10, 2024. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle leaves the roadway and the person inside loses their life, it’s easy to conclude that the driver simply made a mistake. But in my experience, that kind of assumption can prevent people from asking the questions that really matter. Even in single-vehicle crashes, it’s important to examine what may have caused a vehicle to veer off course, and that begins with three critical questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? While single-vehicle wrecks often receive less scrutiny, a complete investigation is still necessary to understand whether external factors—like road conditions, signage, or medical emergencies—may have contributed. It’s worth remembering that the level of training and resources available to law enforcement varies by department, and not every agency has the capacity to conduct an in-depth crash reconstruction.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect played a role in this incident? A sudden loss of steering, braking, or acceleration control can cause a vehicle to leave the roadway with little warning. These kinds of mechanical failures often go unnoticed unless someone makes a deliberate effort to examine the vehicle after the crash. If the vehicle is disposed of or repaired too quickly, that opportunity may be lost.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? Most modern vehicles, including the one involved here, contain event data recorders that capture speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. This data could offer key insight into what happened in the moments before the vehicle left the roadway. Without that information, it’s difficult to determine whether the vehicle responded as expected or if something went wrong.
Understanding how and why a crash happened is essential—especially when someone has lost their life. The answers don’t always come easily, but they can’t be found unless the right questions are pursued from the start. Asking these questions is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by this crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
