UPDATE (February 8, 2024): Recent reports have been released which clarify what happened leading up to and during this incident. According to these reports, a 24-year-old man was traveling in an eastbound Chevy Caprice racing an uninvolved vehicle on Colcord Avenue when the accident took place.

An eastbound Mitsubishi SUV occupied by Markeith Blackshear, Leslie Mariette Zimmerman and four other people was slowing to make a left turn onto North 20th Avenue when the SUV was reportedly rear-ended by the racing Caprice. The collision caused the SUV to go into a skid and overturn, coming to a stop resting on its left side. The Caprice purportedly fled the scene and was found abandoned at the scene of yet another crash. The driver, who had also sustained injuries, was later located and arrested, authorities indicate.

41-year-old Markeith Blackshear incurred reportedly fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was declared deceased at the scene. 44-year-old Leslie Mariette Zimmerman sustained moderate injuries, as did three others from the SUV. A 30-year-old man who had also been an occupant of the SUV incurred suspected severe injuries. All the victims who were injured were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment.

The accident remains under active investigation by local authorities.

UPDATE (January 30, 2024): The man who lost his life as a result of this accident has been identified as Markeith Blackshear. The identities of the two victims who were injured have yet to be confirmed.

Waco, TX — January 21, 2024, one person was killed and two others were injured in a hit-and-run car accident shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Colcord Avenue.

According to authorities, the two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of 20th Street and Colcord Avenue.

One of the two vehicles which had been involved in the accident allegedly fled the scene without stopping to render aid to those injured in the other vehicle. One of the occupants of the vehicle which was still at the scene of the accident incurred reportedly fatal injuries and was declared deceased. The other two occupants of that vehicle sustained injuries of unknown severity and were transported to a local medical facility in order to receive treatment.

A suspect in this hit-and-run incident has since been located and arrested, officials state. Additional information regarding this incident—including the identities of those involved—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
