Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

This crash on Memorial Parkway highlights the severe consequences of collisions between semi-trucks and smaller vehicles, particularly when children are involved. Understanding how and why the SUV and semi-truck collided is essential to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.

One of the primary questions is what led to the collision. Was either driver distracted, speeding or making a sudden maneuver? Investigators will likely examine evidence such as skid marks, vehicle positions and witness accounts to piece together the sequence of events. The semi-truck’s engine control module (ECM) and any available dashcam footage could provide crucial insights into the truck driver’s actions, including speed and braking, leading up to the crash.

Another critical factor is the design and condition of Memorial Parkway near Mastin Lake Road. Was the roadway well-marked and free of obstructions, or were there issues such as poor signage or challenging lane merges? High-traffic areas like this often have complex traffic patterns that can contribute to collisions if drivers are caught off guard.

The role of visibility and traffic flow at the time of the crash will also need to be examined. Was the area experiencing heavy congestion, or were there factors like weather or lighting that might have reduced reaction times for either driver?

Finally, the presence of children in the SUV adds an additional layer of concern. While their reported injuries are less severe than the driver’s, the fact that one remains hospitalized underscores the importance of understanding the crash dynamics and whether vehicle safety features, such as seat belts or airbags, functioned as designed.

For the families of those involved, finding answers about the causes of this collision is vital. A thorough investigation will help clarify whether driver behavior, road design or external factors played a role, and it may guide improvements to reduce the likelihood of similar tragedies in the future.
