Troy, TX — August 28, 2024, Maricruz Wieland was killed following a single-vehicle accident at approximately 9:45 p.m. along I.H. 35.
According to authorities, 42-year-old Maricruz Wieland was traveling in a southbound passenger vehicle on the I.H. 35 service road near Big Elm Creek when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the passenger vehicle failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered to the left, leaving the service road and entering the median that the divides the service road from the main lanes of the highway. It then apparently collided with a concrete and rock embankment at Big Elm Creek, causing it to become airborne. Reports state that it came to a stop in the inside, southbound lane of the highway where it became engulfed in flames.
Wieland suffered fatal injuries as a result of the wreck, according to reports, and was declared deceased at the scene. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
