Callahan County, TX — March 10, 2024, Marianna Elizabeth Pickens-Quiroz and Christopher Schott Vanderslice were killed and two others were injured in a car accident at 2:30 pm. along S.H. 36.
According to authorities, two 18-year-old men were traveling eastbound in a BMW behind a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on S.H. 36 in the vicinity west of County Road 227 when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the BMW attempted to pass the pickup truck on the left at an unsafe time. This resulted in a head-on collision between the BMW and an oncoming Nissan Versa occupied by 26-year-olds Marianna Elizabeth Pickens-Quiroz and Christopher Scott Vanderslice. After the initial collision, the BMW veered back into the westbound lane only to be rear-ended by the pickup truck it had just passed.
Both Pickens-Quiroz and Vanderslice incurred fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and were declared deceased at the scene. One of the men from the BMW became entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated upon the arrival of emergency personnel. Once freed, both he and the other occupant of the BMW were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive treatment from their suspected life-threatening injuries. No other injuries have been reported.
