Whenever I read about a hit-and-run crash like this, my first thought is that the victim’s loved ones deserve clear answers about what happened. That may seem like a simple task, but in my experience, too many crash investigations leave key details unexplored. To truly understand what led to this tragic event, three critical questions must be asked.
First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? In hit-and-run cases, identifying the driver is the top priority, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of a deeper investigation into why the crash happened. Did authorities examine road conditions, lighting or potential obstructions that may have played a role? Were there any witnesses who saw the vehicle before or after the crash? And just as importantly, did investigators secure all possible video footage from traffic cameras, businesses or home security systems that might help track down the vehicle? Without a detailed, methodical investigation, key evidence could be lost.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? If the driver swerved suddenly before striking the pedestrian, it raises the question of whether something malfunctioned. A mechanical failure, such as brake issues, steering problems or even faulty headlights, could have made it harder for the driver to react properly. Additionally, if the object in the road was part of a vehicle — such as a tire or debris from another crash — that could indicate a prior mechanical failure that set this chain of events in motion. Unfortunately, these possibilities are often overlooked unless someone takes the time to ask the right questions.
Finally, has all available electronic data been collected? Since the driver fled the scene, obtaining electronic evidence is even more critical. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses or homes could help identify the vehicle, and traffic cameras may have captured its license plate or direction of travel. If authorities eventually locate the vehicle, the car’s black box data could reveal whether the driver braked or tried to steer away. Additionally, cell phone records could provide insight into whether the driver was distracted at the time. All of this information could be key to understanding what really happened.
At the end of the day, a person lost their life, and the least that can be done is to ensure a full and fair investigation that leaves no stone unturned. The family deserves real answers, and the only way to get them is by asking the right questions and ensuring that every possible piece of evidence is secured.
