In their statements, authorities claim that the victim was nearly twice the legal limit for blood-alcohol content and also had pain killers show up on the toxicology report. I just want to be clear I am not bringing this up to speak ill of the victim nor to upset anyone. But I’ve found that people often immediately overlook folks who lose their lives in an accident where police say they were intoxicated. But there may still be important issues to address, especially in circumstances where an outside party contributed to their death.
For example, the effects of alcohol are often more significant than most drugs when they’re combined, especially at nearly twice the legal limit. But with pain killers, the side effects can show up far quicker and more significantly than with either substance alone. As such, a prudent investigator might look into where the victim got their alcohol and if someone provided the alcohol while the victim was obviously intoxicated. If so, then they could be legally responsible for contributing to an caused by that intoxication.
When people just blame someone automatically and move on, they can miss crucial details like that. So while I can’t say what did or didn’t lead to this awful crash, I do know from experience how important it is that families know they’re getting the whole story. After all, the victim isn’t around to tell their side of the story. It’s up to the evidence to do that for them, and I’m not confident the current public information is the whole story.
