Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a single-vehicle crash like this, one of the most pressing concerns is whether the investigation received the attention it truly needed. In many departments, these kinds of accidents are treated as a lower priority, which can result in shallow reconstructions or missed details.

It’s worth asking whether investigators had the time and proper equipment to fully document the scene. That includes noting the vehicle’s final position, tire marks, and any environmental factors that may have contributed. Without that, important context can slip through the cracks.

Another key question is whether a vehicle defect may have played a role. Mechanical failures like steering or brake issues, or safety system problems such as malfunctioning airbags or seatbelts, can either cause or worsen a crash. These issues are often overlooked unless someone requests a timely inspection.

Finally, was electronic data collected from the vehicle? Most modern vehicles store data about speed, braking, and steering input leading up to a crash. That, along with GPS logs, phone records, or nearby surveillance footage, can help clarify what really happened—if it’s secured quickly.

Asking these questions can make the difference between a complete investigation and one that leaves families with more doubts than answers. If they’re not satisfied with the responses they get, it can be a sign that the investigations need a second look to clear up any issues.
