Rosenberg, TX — April 29, 2024, a man was killed due to an 18-wheeler accident at around 6:41 p.m. at a loading dock off of Commercial Drive.
According to officials, the incident happened in the 24400 block of Commercial Drive, just off Town Center Boulevard, in the area of Hobby Lobby and Home Depot.

Investigators said in preliminary statements that a 21-year-old man was moving wooden pallets that were in the area of the loading dock. An 18-wheeler backing up to the dock reportedly did so unsafely, and it struck the pedestrian. As a result, the man died. Authorities didn’t say if they were considering any charges.

There’s a few reasons why an accident like this can be far more complex than a typical 18-wheeler accident. For one, if this was a work accident, Texas has incredibly complex work fatality laws—the most complex in the whole country. It’s important steps are taken to prepare for that potential legal maze, otherwise it can prove difficult to navigate. Additionally, there’s the inherent challenge of a commercial vehicle accident, which pits ordinary folks against companies that have teams of professionals dedicated to avoiding responsibility after an accident. That, too, requires significant experience and tools to prepare for.
On top of all of that, though, there’s an often overlooked aspect of loading dock accidents: the condition of the property. I had a case a while back, for example, that involved very similar details to these. When we looked at the scene, though, our investigations found something authorities never addressed. The ground leading up to the dock came to a deep valley, going down about halfway before then going back up toward the dock. This essentially meant truck drivers had to gun it backwards, then stop abruptly before they hit the dock. It was a dangerous environment that essentially made a serious accident inevitable. Could it be that such conditions contributed to this accident? Are authorities here even equipped to look into such unusual factors?
Ultimately, people tend to write off these kinds of accidents because they just assume there’s a rigid, one-size-fits-all process for getting the victim’s loved ones the help they need. In reality, there are almost always hurdles to overcome. With this many unique factors at play, I’d be surprised if the same didn’t prove true here, as well.
