When it comes to any serious crash, folks tend to assume authorities just have the whole thing under control. They certainly can, depending on the crash and the department handling things, but I’ve found taking that sort of thing for granted is too risky. Instead, it’s important for folks to consider a few details which can help gauge whether or not there needs to be outside efforts to get clear answers.
- Are authorities spending enough time on the crash? Some departments are quick to have officers move on to other priorities. This can leave officers in an uncomfortable spot where they either have to make a conclusion with sparse information or simply move on and leave victims and families with an incomplete report.
- Have authorities gathered and preserved all electronic evidence? For one, cars and especially commercial trucks may have Engine Control Modules which need to be analyzed. They can show important details, such as a vehicle’s speed and braking leading up to a collision. Additionally, dash cams from the vehicles involved or witnesses as well as security cameras from nearby businesses can help shed light on a crash.
- Are authorities looking into vehicle defects? Since they’re not quite as common, departments don’t often have the tools or experienced personnel to rule out things like faulty brakes, airbags, seatbelts, tires, or steering mechanisms. That means crucial details could slip through the cracks if authorities don’t have more experienced specialists examine the vehicles.
These are just a few questions to ask after a serious truck wreck which can help people determine if they should be seeking answers beyond just the authorities’ investigations. At the end of the day, if they find they’re getting satisfactory answers, it’s likely because authorities are doing a good job. Otherwise, if they’re left with doubts, authorities might be dropping the ball.
