How Did This Accident Occur?

I knew this intersection sounded familiar, and I asked around the office about it. There’s actually an employee here at the firm that’s from that area. He has seen multiple drivers mistakenly get on the wrong side of the road trying to make the turn from eastbound Belt Line to northbound Luna Road, which is where the tracks are. Let me explain why that could be important.

To be clear up front, I don’t have any evidence right now to suggest the design, construction, or maintenance of this intersection contributed to the accident. I only know what authorities have released publicly so far. That said, in my experience, when a fatal accident occurs at a location where drivers make frequent mistakes, that’s worth further attention. Even if it’s just to rule something out, families deserve to know nothing important slipped through the cracks.

With that said, did the recent construction on this crossing make things worse? Maybe it has to do with the new layout, maybe lines or reflectors aren’t clear, or maybe there’s not enough signage here. Or, maybe my colleague has just happened to see multiple instances of highly unusual behavior, coincidentally across many months at the exact same location. But for some reason, multiple drivers have become confused enough at this intersection that they had to stop and turn around so they weren’t on the wrong side of the road. If that’s not enough of a red flag to warrant closer attention, I don’t know what is.

Is there anyone local to this area who’s had issues with the Luna Road and Belt Line Road intersection? Has anyone seen other drivers get confused? Did anyone happen to witness what happened here? Let me know in the comments.
