Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Authorities say that the pickup driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash. I’m not able to say if that’s true or if it contributed to the crash at all. However, any involvement of alcohol can make a crash significantly more complex. This is because many such accidents involve a responsible party not involved directly in the collision itself: an alcohol provider.

Simply put, a lot of alcohol-related accidents involve people who were illegally over-served by a bar or a similar establishment. Such establishments can face consequences for that behavior, including criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and possibly liability if the over-service leads to people getting hurt.

So while I can’t say what happened here exactly, I see no reason why this crash would be any less complex than other potential drunk driving wrecks I’ve come across throughout my career. Ruling out these possibilities requires a lot of evidence, and that’s not something preliminary investigations from authorities tend to dig up on their own.
