Houston, TX — July 17, 2024, Leonardo Marquez Canquiz was injured following an alleged hit-and-run accident at around 8:30 p.m. on Hammerly Boulevard.
According to officials, the incident took place in the area of Hammerly Boulevard and Sam Houston Parkway.
Investigators said that 34-year-old Leonardo Marquez Canquiz was in a Chevy Camaro when it appears a GMC Sierra crashed into the Camaro. That driver allegedly fled the scene and was recommended to face charges for DWI as well as failure to stop and render aid.

While allegations can’t be confirmed right now, intoxicated driving is certainly a common reason drivers flee the scene. But even if that driver is brought up on charges, it may only address part of the larger story. There would also have to be consideration for how intoxicated the driver was and if a local alcohol provider illegally over-served them.
Though this area of Texas law doesn’t get much attention, it happens all the time. Alcohol providers can be on the hook when they over-serve someone, and it leads to people getting hurt. I myself have handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, and there are more out there who simply are let off the hook because no one bothers to look for them. Generally, Harris County is somewhat better than other jurisdictions about investigation these possibilities, though even they let things slip through the cracks. Depending on what all happened here, there could still be a lot more to the story.
