With single-vehicle wrecks, there’s often a concern about thorough authorities were in their investigations. I get calls all the time from folks who feel authorities either didn’t spend enough time looking into things or were more focused on assigning blame than actually gathering facts. This is why I’ve come up with a few key questions victims and families can use to gauge the efforts authorities have made.

The first question is whether investigators had the time, tools, and training necessary to conduct a proper accident reconstruction. Serious crashes require more than just a quick look at the scene and a written report. If authorities were rushed, lacked proper equipment, or simply weren’t experienced in handling complex wrecks, there’s a risk that important details were missed.

Another important factor to consider is whether a vehicle defect may have contributed to the crash. Did the vehicle experience a mechanical failure, such as a brake or steering issue, that led to the driver losing control? Were safety systems like seatbelts and airbags functioning properly to protect the occupants? Authorities don’t always have the means to investigate these factors thoroughly, which is why independent experts may need to step in.

Finally, have investigators gathered all available electronic evidence? Many modern vehicles are equipped with event data recorders that can provide crucial insights into speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS and cellphone records might also help determine what happened. Additionally, if there were nearby security or traffic cameras, their footage could be invaluable in clarifying the events leading up to the wreck.

If authorities can show they have adequate answers to these concerns, it’s likely they did good investigations. But if the answers come up short, that can be a sign that there should be a second set of eyes looking things over. That way, those involved in the crash rest assured they’re getting the full story.
