Dallas, TX — September 28, 2024, Latonya Givens was killed and a man was injured in a motorcycle versus truck accident at 12:15 p.m. on Lancaster Road.
According to authorities, 41-year-old Latonya Givens was a passenger on a Yamaha motorcycle which was heading southbound on Lancaster Road at the Cedardale Road intersection when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a southbound 18-wheeler which had been in the far-left lane of Lancaster Road—a lane designated for left-turns, only—attempted a right turn to head west on Cedardale at an apparently unsafe time. This resulted in a collision between the motorcycle and the back-right side of the 18-wheeler’s trailer.
Givens suffered reportedly fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and was declared deceased at the scene. The 40-year-old man who had also been on the motorcycle suffered moderate injuries, as well; he was transported to a local medical facility in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People who hear about crashes involving motorcycles and large trucks often assume they result from the motorcycle’s smaller size and higher maneuverability leading to risky behaviors. However, in my experience, collisions like this often involve critical errors or decisions made by the truck driver that warrant closer examination.
In this case, the truck driver’s decision to execute a right turn from a left-turn-only lane raises serious concerns. Commercial truck drivers are trained to follow road markings and signage to minimize risks to surrounding traffic. Investigators should determine why the driver attempted such an improper turn and whether distraction, unfamiliarity with the area, or poor judgment played a role. Reviewing event recorder data or any available surveillance footage may provide insight into the moments leading up to the collision.
Another key factor is the trucking company’s role in ensuring its drivers operate safely. Companies must vet their drivers, provide adequate training, and enforce adherence to traffic regulations. If operational pressures, such as tight delivery schedules, influenced the driver’s actions, the company could share responsibility for the crash. A thorough investigation of the company’s policies and practices is necessary to determine whether systemic issues contributed to the wreck.
The dynamics of truck-versus-motorcycle crashes also deserve attention. Trucks have significant blind spots and require wide turns, creating inherent challenges in urban or intersection-heavy areas. However, these challenges also underscore the responsibility of the truck driver to be especially vigilant and deliberate in their actions. Investigators should explore whether the truck’s mirrors, signals, or other safety equipment were functioning correctly and whether the driver took appropriate precautions before attempting the turn.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by this devastating crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
