Lashanna Marshall, Marilet Brown Car Accident in Harris County

According to officials, 44-year-old Marilet Brown was in a Lincoln Navigator going westbound on F.M. 1960. 45-year-old Lashanna Marshall was going eastbound in an Infiniti. While authorities described the Infiniti as going the wrong direction, they described events as the Infiniti going to the left across the median and into westbound lanes. There, the Infiniti collided head-on with the Lincoln. Debris apparently hit a Honda Civic driven by 37-year-old Enre Gant.

As a result of the collision, Lashanna Marshall was killed. Marilet Brown sustained serious injuries. It’s unclear if Gant had any injuries. Right now, the cause of the crash is unclear.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

While it may not sound like an important distinction, it’s troubling that authorities aren’t clear on if this was a crossover wreck or a wrong-way accident. Let me explain why that matters.

When people hear that a driver crossed left of center, they generally recognize there may have been something the victim couldn’t control. Did they have a medical emergency? Was there a mechanical defect? Did a tire blowout? Were there hazards in the roadway? Driver error is likely, of course, but there could be extenuating circumstances.

When people hear someone was on the wrong side of the road, though, they just immediately assume the driver was drunk. That would bring up all kinds of complex issues, including finding out if a local alcohol provider illegally over-served that person.

That’s why being more specific about what exactly happened here is so important. When people jump to conclusions, it muddies the waters and makes it more challenging for the victims and families to know whether or not they’re getting the whole story. Hopefully authorities have been more clear behind the scenes than they’ve been in their public statements. Otherwise, those involved here may be left with doubts and unanswered questions.
