It’s an unfortunate reality that single-vehicle accidents like this one aren’t generally viewed as a high priority. Many people, investigators sometimes among them, chalk up those crashes to driver error and assume there’s little else to say. Jumping to conclusions isn’t fair to the victim, though, because many possible factors in a single-vehicle wreck are entirely out of the driver’s hands. Without an open mind and a careful investigation, complex or uncommon factors could slip through the cracks.
Here are just a few of the many questions that need answers in pursuit of the whole story: Was the victim’s car malfunctioning or defective? Are the roads in that area in good repair? How is the lighting near the crash site? Is it possible someone else ran the victim off the road? Did he have a medical emergency of some kind?
Some of those factors may be less common than others, but I’ve seen plenty of cases where every one of those details was crucial. That’s why investigators should look into every possibility, at the very least to rule things out. Did that happen here?
