Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s not clear why the victim’s vehicle apparently stopped or began slowing on the highway. Authorities didn’t say anything about traffic, they didn’t say if the victim had some kind of emergency, and they didn’t say anything about whether or not the victim activated their emergency lights. Is this lack of information just authorities withholding specifics from the public, or do they not really know what happened here?

It would surprise folks to see how many of the serious accidents I’ve handled over 30 years where authorities simply didn’t finish their investigations. This can happen for many reasons. Some officers are inexperienced. Many aren’t given the proper tools to do their job. Others may be moved to other priorities their supervisors feel are more important. That’s why a lot of serious accidents end up in the hands of independent investigators who can pick up the slack. Otherwise, there’s no telling what might slip through the cracks.
