When a driver runs multiple red lights, causes multiple crashes, and is later found to be intoxicated, it’s worth asking: Where were they drinking before getting behind the wheel?
More often than not, drunk driving crashes don’t happen in a vacuum. Texas law makes it clear that bars and restaurants aren’t allowed to serve alcohol to someone who is already obviously intoxicated. If an alcohol provider ignored those rules and continued serving this driver past the point of impairment, they could share responsibility for the harm that followed.
While police are investigating the driver’s actions, it’s just as important to investigate whether a bar or restaurant contributed to the situation by overserving them. Dram shop laws exist to hold negligent alcohol providers accountable, not just for the sake of justice in this case but to help prevent future crashes caused by unlawful alcohol service.
