If the allegations here are true, then it’s important to know whether or not authorities are getting the whole story. Obviously, if someone drives while intoxicated, and people get hurt or killed as a result, that warrants appropriate consequences. The challenge, though, is knowing if the alleged intoxicated driver is the sole party responsible. I’ve had hundreds of cases with details similar to this which turned out to also involve a negligent alcohol provider. Did that happen here?

Simply put, it’s illegal in Texas for bars, restaurants, liquor stores, and other alcohol providers to serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. Doing so exposes those establishments to potential criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability for the harm resulting from that intoxication. Too often, authorities are so focused on seeing a driver face charges that they move on too quickly and let these alcohol providers slip under the radar. Meanwhile, the alcohol providers get off scot-free to continue business as usual, and more people are bound to get hurt.

That’s why I shine a light on crashes like this. Sometimes, there’s only an individual negligent driver who needs to answer for their mistakes after an alleged intoxicated driving accident. Other times, there are multiple wrongdoers who need to be held accountable, and that requires more thorough investigations. At the end of the day, victims and families deserve to know those who harmed them are going to face appropriate consequences. Whether or not authorities are taking the steps to see that happen remains to be seen.
