Kirbyville, TX — February 3, 2024, Kaleb Smith was killed in a rollover car accident at approximately 3:00 p.m. along U.S. Highway 96.
According to authorities, 28-year-olde Kaleb Smith was traveling in a southbound Dodge flatbed truck approximately a mile south of Kirbyville when the accident took place.

Preliminary reports indicate that the Dodge may have been traveling at high rates of speed leading up to the accident. The Dodge allegedly veered right and off of the roadway in order to avoid a collision with the back of a CMV. Leaving the roadway caused the Dodge to enter a ditch and overturn, rolling an unknown number of times before coming to a stop. Smith incurred reportedly fatal injuries as a result of the accident and was declared deceased at the scene.
Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Some may think there’s not much more to discuss. When people see a driver run off the road like this, they tend to just immediately blame the victim. I certainly can’t say what did or didn’t happen here. I know from experience, though, how often a crash like this can involve factors drivers can’t necessarily control.
Crashes like this can happen due to something as subtle as a defective tire. There may have been mechanical issues. A driver may have been illegally over-served by a bar or similar establishment. The roadway itself could have problems. Vehicles hit by a driver who lost control may have been illegally parked. This all may have been due to a sudden medical emergency.
At the end of the day, it’s not about what’s likely or not. It’s about letting the evidence speak for itself. If authorities here were exhaustive and considered all possibilities—even unlikely ones—it would frankly be unusual. As such, there could still be a lot more to this story.
