Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Throughout my career, there are some types of crashes which automatically raise flags because they’re often treated haphazardly or dismissively. Among the worst offenders of that are motorcycle wrecks and accidents involving young drivers. Let me explain why these accidents raise concerns.
The reality is a lot of people are quick to just blame the drivers in those situations despite not knowing the whole story. Even authorities are capable of this, rushing to conclusions because they’ve seen a lot of similar accidents in the past. Sometimes, officers go with their gut without actually gathering facts to confirm or rule out their suspicions. This has resulted in plenty of scenarios where families have asked us to take a second look at a crash, and our efforts found evidence that either contradicted police findings or otherwise brought important extenuating circumstances to light that authorities initially overlooked.
To be clear, it’s possible authorities here were careful and thorough. If families take their concerns and questions to authorities, they may be able to provide clear answers that show they did good work and prioritized getting the grieving family the full story about what happened. However, it would be far from the first time if authorities couldn’t provide clear answers, and that led to a family seeking out a second opinion.
