One of the challenges with single-vehicle wrecks that folks don’t often consider is how much authorities rely on statements from the people involved in the accident. Generally speaking, a thorough accident reconstruction should include testimony from the victims and clear evidence through things like laser mapping of the scene, examining the vehicle, pulling Engine Control Module and cell phone data, looking for nearby video cameras, and all kinds of other steps to get the facts and build a story. A lot of times, though, authorities will just speak to drivers and any witnesses, then draw their conclusions based on that.
Naturally, this can lead to situations where victims and families feel authorities are overlooking something important or aren’t fairly representing what really happened. That’s one of the reasons I get so many calls about single-vehicle accidents. If they’re not treated as a high priority, mistakes happen, and folks can end up with answers that just aren’t satisfactory. Maybe authorities here have proven to be more thorough behind the scenes, of course. It’s just that it wouldn’t be unusual if there was a lot more to this story8 that required more thorough independent investigations.
