Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People often latch onto a few terms in preliminary accident reports and use them to jump to conclusions. In the case of this crash, those keywords might include “racing” and “teen driver.” Some folks may have quickly decided who and what were to blame, but it’s never prudent to jump the gun like that.
As always, it’s important to investigate carefully and make sure only the facts tell the story. What if there’s more to this than just a race gone wrong? Did the victim’s car blow a tire? Did any of its parts malfunction? Are there recalls associated with that vehicle? Could the other driver have run the victim off the road before they fled? All those and many other possibilities will hopefully be considered and investigated, if for no other reason than to rule them out.
To be clear, I don’t know any more than reports say about this accident. Is it possible things can be chalked up to a young adult’s unfortunate mistake? Maybe. Is that so certain that there’s no need for further investigation? Absolutely not. A young life was lost here, and that’s more than enough reason to take the matter seriously and learn the whole story. I just hope authorities take the time and care needed to answer all his family’s questions.
