Juan Martinez Injured in Hit-and-Run Truck Accident on U.S. 190 in Milam County, TX

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an eastbound Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck hauling a trailer loaded with three other pickup trucks failed to safely navigate a curve in the roadway. It reportedly veered left of center, entering the westbound lane of the highway. However, it had to swerve back into the eastbound lane as the GMC occupied by Martinez was oncoming. In doing so, it reportedly lost all three of the pickup trucks which had been loaded on the trailer, one of which landed on top of the GMC. The Dodge allegedly fled the scene, the 53-year-old man who had been behind the wheel failing to stop and render aid of any sort to the victim.

Martinez was reportedly entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. Once freed from the aftermath, he was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive treatment for the serious injuries he incurred resulting from the wreck. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they result from a simple mistake or bad timing. However, based on my experience, crashes involving improperly secured loads—especially in hit-and-run cases—require thorough investigation to fully understand the circumstances. This incident on U.S. Highway 190 is no exception.

One of the primary issues investigators will need to explore is why the Dodge Ram 3500 failed to safely navigate the curve, leading to the loss of its load. The fact that the truck was hauling three other pickup trucks raises questions about whether the load was properly secured and if the driver was operating the vehicle safely. Securing heavy loads is a critical responsibility, and any negligence in that area can lead to serious consequences, as seen in this case. Investigators will also need to determine whether the driver of the Dodge was distracted, fatigued, or simply driving too fast for the curve, which could have contributed to the loss of control.

Although the driver initially fled the scene, they have since been located, which is important in holding them accountable. Failing to stop and render aid after a wreck is a serious offense, and this behavior only exacerbates the harm caused by the unsecured load.

If the Dodge Ram was operating under a commercial company, the company’s role in this accident should be closely examined. Commercial companies are responsible for ensuring that their drivers are properly trained and that vehicles and loads are secured safely. Any lapses in load security protocols, maintenance, or oversight could mean the company shares responsibility for the crash. Investigating whether the driver was under pressure to meet tight deadlines or if proper safety checks were ignored will be critical in understanding whether the company could have done more to prevent this accident.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to gather vital evidence, it is crucial to explore every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
